Navigating work with Voice-enabled technology

Voice-enabled virtual assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri right from turning on the lights to searching something, they provide ease of navigation. Given this we are seeing voice enable technology making its way more into the office space itself.

Multi-modal workstations with visual and aural methods of input are gaining much importance. Voice-enabled workstations that let you manage crucial tasks with a simple command and proactively remind you of important tasks based on your work calendar and habits, smart office assistants built on Google Cloud (e.g., using the Dialogflow conversational AI platform) are slowly but surely getting popular. These not only help employees locate and book spare desks, but also set up meetings with colleagues, and more.

Microsoft’s Cortana, Google’s Assistant, Amazon’s Alexa, or Apple’s Siri work with email or office tools that dictate messages and read emails aloud. Dictate, is an add-in for MS software, that offers to type using voice. Dragon, a key player in the field of voice recognition software, utilizes ‘deep learning technology and it also betters accuracy and adapts to the background noise. Braina is another voice based solution which also works as an all-around digital PC assistant. Companies that previously didn’t have the resources to build this kind of capability, can now use third-party Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to get their very own voice capabilities.

Apart from voice-enabled technology that is supportive while “at work desk”, we also have technology like Tact.ai which can assist people “away from desk”. This software gives people a new way to interact with information on the go, right from going through emails and sales history to locating insights automatically, without any human intervention. Combined with the Internet of Things (IoT) voice-enabled equipment can also control light/temperature control, printing, and access to office IT, operations and much more. When combined with infrared and facial recognition, we can now assess our health through infrared temperature systems before we walk through an automatic office door that not only recognizes you, but also acknowledges you and shares timely alerts.

Just like our offices that are getting smarter as we navigate our workday, voice based technology is one of the newer tools positioned to change how we work and collaborate in the office.
