Humanizing today’s workplace for a brighter tomorrow

In today’s day of phygital workplace, creating a work environment that supports different styles and types of working is paramount. Some companies have already got back to work full force or have adopted the hybrid model.  With people returning to offices, designing the workplace that supports new expectations and different ways of working is top of the mind for many businesses.

There are many terminologies, new coinages floating around in the market, but the crux is about focusing on employees and their requirements. To put it simply, the new workplace is about developing, advancing and prioritising people at the workplace. A workplace where employees needs are given priority and employees are at the heart of the workplace. A place where employers typically think beyond its business walls and prioritise the needs of its employees wellness and wellbeing. This approach towards a more Human Centric Workplace is leading to significant changes in the workplace design itself. The workplace of today, while catering to the needs of the diverse group of employees has to be one that promotes diversity and inclusion.

The focus today is on providing a work environment that is fluid and creates a balance without any regimental demarcations. More and more organisations are focusing on creating a workplace that is comfortable for its employees, one that provides a conducive and collaborative work environment. We are seeing incorporation of multiple design elements at the workplace with greater focus on “WE” spaces that are typically used for collaboration, celebration, conventions like training, townhalls etc, that in turn helps community building at the workplace. You may wonder why community building at the workplace has taken on so much importance? Pandemic induced work from home had led to increased feelings of isolation, detachment, stress, anxiety, a feeling of being left out and being disconnected.

Building a community within the four walls of the workspace becomes important as it addresses these issues, while allowing the employee to feel connected to the company and being a part of a larger whole. It also lends confidence to the employee and makes him /her feel accepted and not alone. Thus, the idea is to create a workplace that both the company and employees can relate to. Similarly, by focusing on what the employees want, organisations make employees feel welcomed, happier and motivated on their return to work.

The most important aspect of creating an ideal workplace of the future is to understand what the employees are expecting from the physical workplace. Understanding what works for them and what does not will help organisations create a conducive physical  work environment for the employees.
